Siargao del Palmas at SM Butuan: A Fresh New Experience

Siargao del Palmas at SM Butuan: A Fresh New Experience

If there’s one thing I love, it’s discovering great food spots that not only satisfy the palate but also leave a lasting impression. One such place is Siargao del Palmas, a restaurant we first tried at its original location in Montilla Boulevard. While our initial experience there had its ups and downs, the restaurant has since moved to SM Butuan, and I must say, the change in location has brought a remarkable improvement.

Our First Experience at Siargao del Palmas

Back in January 2024, my husband and I decided to celebrate our wedding anniversary at Siargao del Palmas, then located in Montilla Boulevard. We had high expectations for the place, as we had heard good reviews about their food. However, while some dishes were enjoyable, one thing that truly disappointed us was their Kinilaw.

For those unfamiliar with Kinilaw, it’s a traditional Filipino dish of fresh raw fish marinated in vinegar, calamansi, onions, and spices—a refreshing and flavorful delicacy. Unfortunately, what we were served was far from what we expected. Instead of fresh, firm fish, the meat appeared half-boiled, losing the distinct texture and taste that make Kinilaw a standout dish. This was a major letdown, especially since we had chosen the restaurant for a special occasion.

Aside from that, the ambiance at their Montilla Boulevard location was decent but didn’t quite have the inviting charm that would make you want to linger. The service was okay, but it didn’t leave a strong impression. Because of this, we didn’t have plans of returning anytime soon—until we heard the exciting news.

A New Beginning: Siargao del Palmas at SM Butuan

When we found out that Siargao del Palmas had relocated to SM Butuan, we were both surprised and intrigued. The idea of the restaurant moving to a more accessible, high-traffic location seemed like a great decision. What’s even better, my pamangkin, Miles, had never tried dining there before, so we decided to give the place another chance.

From the moment we stepped into the SM Butuan branch, we could already feel the difference. The place looked more modern, spacious, and well-lit, giving off a warm and welcoming vibe. Unlike their previous location, which felt a bit cramped, this new spot had a more comfortable dining setup, perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal with family and friends.

An Improved Dining Experience

This time around, the experience was entirely different—in the best way possible. The food was a huge improvement from what we remembered. The flavors were richer, the portions were generous, and the overall quality was much better.

But the biggest highlight? The Kinilaw.

The dish that had disappointed us before was now perfectly prepared—fresh, tangy, and full of that signature zest we love about Kinilaw. This time, it was truly "Kinilaw talaga!" The fish was fresh and tender, perfectly marinated in a balance of vinegar, calamansi, and spices. It was everything we had originally hoped for, making up for our previous experience.

Beyond the Kinilaw, the other dishes we ordered were just as delightful. Their seafood dishes were well-seasoned and cooked to perfection, while their grilled items had that smoky, flavorful goodness that made us want to order more. It was evident that Siargao del Palmas had truly stepped up their game, both in food quality and overall dining experience.

Service and Ambiance: A Major Upgrade

Another thing that stood out was the improved service. The staff was friendlier, more attentive, and quick to serve our orders. This was a refreshing change compared to our last visit, where the service felt a bit slow and indifferent. It made us feel more valued as customers, which is always a huge plus.

The ambiance at the SM Butuan branch was another major upgrade. The interiors had a more polished and inviting design, and the overall atmosphere was more vibrant and lively. Whether you’re dining with family, friends, or even on a date, the setting felt just right.

Final Thoughts: A Restaurant Worth Revisiting

Looking back at our experiences with Siargao del Palmas, it’s clear that change can be a great thing. The restaurant’s move to SM Butuan has brought not only a better location but also significant improvements in food quality, service, and ambiance. From a disappointing anniversary meal to a memorable dining experience, this place has completely redeemed itself in our eyes.

For anyone who loves seafood, Filipino cuisine, and a great dining atmosphere, I highly recommend giving Siargao del Palmas a try—especially at their new SM Butuan branch. Whether it’s your first time or you’re like us, giving the restaurant a second chance, you’re in for a much better experience than before.

Will we be coming back? Absolutely! And this time, we’re bringing more friends and family along to share in the improved flavors and warm hospitality of Siargao del Palmas at SM Butuan.
